On The Road Again

Since my last post we’ve finished our van (Vansel Adams) and are now on the road again full time. The feeling of being in control again is a wonderful thing. Even though there’s less certainty with some things, like where we’re going to sleep at night, that uncertainty still feels like control.

We can choose to be where we want to be and stay where we want to stay. That’s even more important now as we choose to stay away from as many people as possible. Fortunately that’s how we typically operate anyway, so for us this is not a big change from how we were living last year in the school bus.

Its also nice to not have the van build take up nearly every resource I have at my disposal. The mental fatigue of making decision after decision, not knowing whether or not it would work out in your future house was a bit demanding. And that’s to say nothing of the physical and monetary hit you take when building a vehicle like this. So to be able to actually hit the road and to put “the build” behind us is huge.

Its also interesting how quickly we were able to slide back into the lifestyle. We loved living in the bus last year and got used to a lot of the things that came with full time travel. I was afraid that, after nearly 9 months of being stationary, we would have a big learning curve when it finally came time to leave. Fortunately that does not seem to be the case. Weirdly, I feel more normal now than when we were sitting still. Even when we were feeling great at the Air BnB we stayed at for several months I felt a little off and displaced. Now that we’re even more displaced (living in a van) things feel more normal and less up in the air.

I’m also happy to be able to direct more of my attention and resources to making work. I shot a few things while we were stationary but not the work I’m truly interested in. Now that our location availability has exploded, I’ll be able to get back to work and making things.
