2023 Review
I’m not really sure how to think about 2023. Unlike so many posts I’ve seen on social media, I don’t have excessively strong feelings about it. Maybe that’s ok. Maybe it’s not optimal to try to classify anything, much less a year, as having been “good” or “bad” in the extreme. We so often want an answer to be black or white. The past 12 months have been challenging, certainly, but not without growth. Every event in 2023 was a teacher.
It’s good to reflect on the past year so that the new one can be entered into with sober, open eyes. I do feel like I’m going into 2024 more informed, and with greater clarity, so I’m thankful for that.
In terms of work, 2023 included the creation of one of my favorite images, “Bodies”, which won 1st place in the Professional Fine Art, Landscape category in the International Photography Awards. “Chromatic Guise” was also captured and won silver in the 2023 reFocus awards Professional Landscape category, as well as 4th place in The Independent Photographer Color Competition. “Chromatic Guise” was also an official selection for the International Photography Awards Professional Fine Art Landscape category.

In 2023 I was selected as part of Photolucida’s Critical Mass top 200 for the most recent installment of my Dark Matter series. One of those same images was also included in a National Geographic book published this year by Anand Varma titled, Invisible Wonders alongside some truly astounding imagery. Other images from the series served as singles covers and the album cover for Vandelux’s debut album When The Light Breaks.

I’m thankful for the quality and quantity of opportunities that presented themselves last year and the wonderful people I’ve been able to work with and get to know as a result. 2023 was another year of getting to do what I love most, and I know I’ll look back on it fondly and with a great deal of gratitude.
2024: let’s get weird.
