Regularly updated observations from the road. Photographed with the Leica M9.
Late September - Early October
The weather turns cool. Fall colors dot and sometimes cover mountainsides. We drive south from Alaska. The return journey feels faster and more comfortable. There are no mosquitos. I pick up trash and write a haiku at a rest stop.
“Shadows extend long
Aspen leaves rattle softly
A semi passes.”
2026
September
Autumn meets us in Denali National Park. I am enamored with the red underbrush. I photograph more of my surroundings than at any other point in the year so far. I attend MODE photography festival in Minneapolis, then fly back to Anchorage. Tiffany captures a stunning photograph of a bull moose.
August
Drinks are bought for us at the first bar we enter in Alaska. We hike the Skookum Volcano Trail and camp in Wrangle Saint Elias National Park. McCarthy’s remote restaurant us full of good dogs, good food, and good beer. I photograph Ablation. We photograph Fin and Humpback whales. New and old friends meet us in Homer. We are gifted freshly caught Halibut. It is some of the best fish we’ve ever had. I hike the Harding Ice Field Trail and photograph glaciers. I fly to Spain to assist in helping a friend photograph the eclipse.
Early August
We begin to drive north to Alaska through Canada. The enormity of driving 6,000 miles round trip sets in, and we travel long hours each day. Mosquitos are everywhere. Despite finding some of the most beautiful campsites we’ve ever seen, I don’t take many photos of the journey.
July
We turn back east to meet with friends from Alabama and camp again in South Dakota. We show them around and catch up. Air Force One flies low, directly over our campsite in the Black Hills before landing. Preparations are made for Alaska.
June
The Bighorn Mountains greet us with comfortable temperatures and plentiful Trout. I photograph Devil’s Tower on the way to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks where I accidentally run into Ben Horne. We are reminded of just how beautiful and diverse Wyoming is.
May
We stay in Custer State Park and take care of paperwork in Rapid City. On my birthday I order a bison ribeye.
March - April
We continue to travel north and west. We spend time in Tennessee and Kentucky, then make quick progress to the badlands of South Dakota.
February
Freshwater springs continue to keep us interested. Clyde Butcher has an open house at his gallery in Big Cypress. We turn north and visit Bok Tower Gardens and continue to explore Florida. My focus is still on photographing Springwater. We travel northwest to Alabama to meet a new family member.
January
We say goodbye to Tuco, our 13 year old Lab mix. They keys to our house of 5 years are handed off and we leave it’s driveway for the last time. We travel in our van, now home, to Georgia, then continue to Florida. We visit swamps and several of Florida’s first magnitude springs. I begin to photograph Springwater.
