Stuck in Dumont Dunes

While in the area we stopped by Dumont Dunes to take some images and see the area. I used to think sand dunes were these exceptionally rare things in the US, but now know there are actually quite a few across the country.

Walking through the dunes can be challenging but also exceptionally rewarding. The way the dunes interact light is a mesmerizing spectacle, but can make travel difficult in the wrong vehicle.

This was our experience the last couple days. Dumont Dunes is an OHV (off highway vehicle) area that is essentially a playground for adults to rip across and over sand dunes at high speed, engines roaring. Our van, though it has all wheel drive, is nowhere near as capable.

Fortunately some good Samaritans were able to pull us out, but only after we tried to dig ourselves out for over an hour!
