Light Pollution Series Reboot

Back in college, one of my first completed series was titled “Light Pollution”. I traveled across rural Georgia and South Carolina at night looking for street and other artificial light sources spilling over onto natural objects, like trees.

I’ve always wanted to re-visit that project. Recently we had some fog roll in that I couldn’t resist going out and using to make some night photographs of the same subject.

I very seldomly photograph at night, and even less often do I photograph in the city. However, the allure of a foggy evening and how it interacts with artificial light is too interesting to pass up.

This series was shot with my Nikon Z6 as well as a lens I’ve had in some form or another for well over a decade: the nifty 50mm f/1.8. I had forgotten how much fun it could be just walking around in the evening, raising ISO and shooting wide open. It’s not easy working with such small depth of field, but with some patience you can grab acceptable sharpness handheld.
