Review Santa Fe 2024

From Dark Matter III

This year I had the honor of being juried into the Review Santa Fe portfolio review. Organized by Center, Review Santa Fe selects approximately 100 photographers to participate in several 1 on 1 portfolio reviews by industry professionals ranging from gallerists, curators, book publishers, photo editors, and photographers.

This was my second portfolio review, but my first in person review. I have to say the difference is stark, with the in-person review carrying much greater weight than the digital review over Zoom I had in 2021.

The opportunity to put work in front of these industry professionals is invaluable. The feedback I received was thoughtful and enthusiastic, and I was able to make friends and network with other participants. You can, and should, view the other attendees and their work here. Certainly a worthwhile and fulfilling experience. Not to mention the fact that Santa Fe is perhaps my favorite city.

Part of Review Santa Fe is its infamous portfolio walk. Held in a large open facility, the participants display their prints while the public walks through, asking questions and engaging with the photographers. I was told by several previous participants that the walk is very well attended, but I was not prepared for the number of people that came in to review the work. Santa Fe was flexing it’s healthy art community as hundreds of locals came through and asked questions, commented on the work, and participated in conversation.

I chose to show work primarily from the Dark Matter series. I also brought prints from a new, ongoing series to gain feedback. I’m happy to have brought two projects, as there were several surprising connections made between the two along with valuable feedback on the presentation, direction of the series, and through-lines connecting them.

I can’t say enough about the staff that made the event possible. There’s clearly an exceptional amount of work that goes into putting on an event like this, and Center performed.

My booth at the portfolio walk, Review Santa Fe 2024. Lots of lessons learned.
